While celebrating Hanukkah with my stepsister and her family in San Francisco last week, I learned about the five-alarm fire whose smoke (and water) damaged 6 of 14 classrooms at Creative Arts Charter School the day before--including all of the teaching materials and books my brother-in-law has collected for his K/1 classroom over the past 14 years. Though the classrooms can be relocated, it will take time and much-needed funds to replace everything, including the destroyed art studio, library, office, learning resource room, and multi-purpose room.
Due to recent cuts to education, CACS is already scrambling to make ends meet. The school will begin accepting donations of general school supplies--paper, pencils, markers, art supplies, sports equipment, laptops, and K-5 books for classroom and school libraries on Tuesday, January 3.
The highly creative, diverse student body at CACS includes my niece (8) and nephew (10), who have attended this innovative K-8 arts-integrated public school since Kindergarten. The school uses student-centered instructional approaches, cooperative, project-based learning activities, and an integration of the arts into the core curriculum.

You can also donate goods or services by Feb. 24 to the Hearts for the Arts Benefit Dinner & Auction. (In appreciation for your support, they will publicize your contribution at the event, in the school, on the website, and via advertising in their auction catalog.)

Such a tragedy. This school is close to my sister's house and one she recently toured for my niece going into kinder next year. We are spreading the word for donations.
